Kai Bienert, who was already taking photographs as a teenager, set up his first darkroom himself. After training as a chef and studying business administration, he began working as a freelance photographer in 1989. He studied photography and media theory at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig.
Since 2000, he has been documenting concerts and rehearsals in the classical and contemporary music sector under the agency name ‘mutesouvenir’. He photographs composers, conductors and musicians in concert halls. Bienert has specialised in the Berlin scene and its international guests. The result is an archive of the big names of the last two decades. These include composers such as Karl-Heinz Stockhausen, Pierre Boulez, Olga Neuwirth and Mauricio Kagel. He has also photographed musicians such as Anne-Sophie Mutter, Mariss Jansons, Gustavo Dudamel, Alondra de la Parra, Cameron Carpenter, Georges Aperghis, György Kurtág, Teodor Currentzis and Alfred Brendel.
Bienert is a regular participant at international festivals such as ‘Young Euro Classic’ in Berlin.
We are delighted to be able to present his constantly growing archive at ‘ullstein bild’.
